Social entrepreneurs recognize when a societal issue or problem seems without resolution and then work tirelessly to find an effective market-based solution. For the past 35 years, Harborquest has been a leading social entrepreneur in the area of employment for those outside the mainstream economy.
To achieve its mission, Harborquest invented a new model — one that blends strong case management, classroom training and on-the-job work experience to create a more fault-tolerant work environment. As a result, Harborquest workers have an opportunity to develop the habits and skills needed to succeed. Graduated stress, peer support, and on-the-job coaching often result in long-term employment success. And, it provides employers with a stable and ready-to-succeed workforce.
Over 80% of the funding needed to support Harborquest is received as earned income from satisfied private sector businesses. As a social enterprise, the Harborquest model uses all of its earned income to support and grow our programs and services. This, in turn, greatly reduces the level of government and philanthropic subsidies required to operate the program. It also serves to greatly leverage such grant support, ensuring the maximum programmatic impact for the dollars invested.
